Red Sea Breakout

In 1940 Commonwealth forces captured the port of Massawa in Italian East Africa. Most of the remaining ships of the Italian Red Sea Flotilla were scuttled in the harbor. A few ran the British blockade and escaped to Japan or France.

This scenario supposes the Italians tried a larger and more coordinated breakout which develops into a battle near the island of Perim at the southern end of the Red Sea.

Map

Use a standard open sea map. Place a large island (2 – 4 sectors) in the middle of the British side of the board.

Special Rules

Exit Battlefield – Italian ships and submarines in the British deployment zone may spend one move to exit the battlefield. If they are not crippled, they score victory points equal to their point cost.

Victory Conditions

Score victory points for destroyed units as normal. Score victory points for destroying the enemy’s surface fleet as normal (note that subs, planes, and units with No Sea Control do not count as part of your surface fleet for this purpose). In addition, Italian units that are not crippled that exit the British deployment zone score victory points equal to their point cost.

Optional Variations

  1. Let the British choose up to one Leander-class cruiser (HMAS Sydney, HMS Ajax, or HMNZS Leander).
  2. Let the Italians choose up to one C.202 Foglore.
  3. Make the long map edges coastal sectors, narrowing the battlefield.
  4. Give all destroyers the Lay Smoke Screen special ability.
